Sherlock Holmes made his debut in 1887 but it was this collection of 12 stories, first published in The Strand magazine, that established him as an unrivalled detective, and Arthur Conan Doyle as one of the most popular writers of the day. No matter how bizarre the facts, Holmes takes everything in his stride, applying his forensic skills and towering intellect to the problem, and the truth will out.
